Before selecting a vendor to help you meet your training needs, you need to consider the following factors.
-
What company and personal values are
critical in the vendor selection?
-
What does your performance analysis
tell you about the issues you are trying to address?
-
What are you hiring the vendor to do?
Which parts/phases of your training system will they handle?
-
What type of working relationship (with
the vendor) are you interested in?
- Partnership in the project?
- Purchaser/vendor?
- Blind leading the blind?
- Consultant as expert/organization as
learner?
- Other model?
-
What type of evaluation will you and
your organization require?
- Level One: Learner Reaction
Evaluation -
Determines learners' satisfaction with the learning experience
- Level Two: Knowledge and Skills
Evaluation -
Determines what trainees learned as a result of instruction
- Level Three: Application
Evaluation -
Determines whether learners are applying their new knowledge or skills to their
job
- Level Four: Organizational
Results Evaluation -
Determines how instruction is impacting the organization or unit's goals
-
If the organization doesn't require
evaluations, who will say whether the training is a success ... and what criteria will
they use?
-
To whom will the vendor report? Who
will want to know what the vendor does/provides/what their credentials are, etc...?
-
What are your biases about training?
What do you expect the consultants to know about adult learning? What kind of credentials
and experience do you want them to have? Are you after technical expertise? Training
expertise? Both?
-
How much do you want them to know about
the industry or about your company specifically?
-
How much control do you want? Need?
-
Do you want to play to your strengths
or compensate for your weaknesses with a vendor?
