Any of us are experienced at presenting "slide shows" and lectures and calling
it training. While this technique is effective for transmitting information, the
workshop approach is much more effective for accomplishing lasting attitude
change. The following tips should help you facilitate learning that lasts.
-
Deliver no more than 15 minutes of
lecture before an exercise.
-
Break larger groups into smaller groups
to carry out the discussion/exercises.
-
Give the small groups some structure and
a clear guideline about what they should bring back to the entire group from the small
group exercise/discussion.
-
Identify clear learning goals for the
small group exercises.
-
Be sure to clearly cover the learning
points for achieving the goals in the debrief of the exercise.
-
Use a facilitation and questioning
technique for the debrief of each exercise. Draw their "work" summary points,
and/or conclusions into the framework of the learning points. Better to let them discuss
their conclusions in their own words and draw their conclusions into the learning points
-
Teach through questioning and
facilitation of discussion rather than through lecture. Use the lawyers' approach of
"leading" the witness in order to bring out learning points and draw appropriate
conclusions.
-
Engage each member of the audience
through personal examples, talking with them about how the material applies to them,
asking them for examples, soliciting the help of those who may have some expertise with
the subject matter being covered, discussing personal issues with them over the break.
-
The instructor's role is skillful
facilitation; relate points made by the small groups during the debrief of the exercises
to general themes coming from all of the groups. Point out and attempt to clarify the
differences among the groups.
-
Acknowledge the experience and expertise
of the audience.
