Program Overview

Leaders learn best by doing. The best way, then, for leaders to learn about the complex and unpredictable process of leading large-scale change is to actually do it in their own organizations. Of course, reading the latest theories or "best practices" is also valuable and very important. However, neither reading the most up-to-date research nor listening to the best change gurus can adequately prepare leaders for the challenges they will face as they steer their own organizations through a real-time change.

This personal leadership development program offers the best of both kinds of learning. Designed to be an exceptional process that provides the latest research, theory and best practices on leading change, at the same time, the program supports leaders and leadership teams as they apply that knowledge to real change initiatives.

Business leaders can choose from dozens of executive leadership development programs.  The market is filled with offerings, including some from the best business schools in the country. Nevertheless, this program is unique in that it provides the following:

  • Opportunities for participants to learn from the experts as well as from other leader-participants who are also actively engaged in change initiatives over the course of a full year.  Most other leadership development programs are completely expert-driven and end after a few hours, a weekend or a week.

  • A highly skilled coach assigned for a year to each leader or leadership team.  The coach will assist the leaders and leadership teams in their own personal development and will support them as they carry out an actual change initiative in their organizations.  Most other leadership development programs leave it up to the participants to figure out how to actually use what they have learned once they are back from their courses.

  • Access to an entire pool of coaching and consulting talent to call upon as critical issues arise during the course of the change project.

Thus, this program blends practical, hands-on learning with one-on-one assessment and coaching to ensure the personal development of every leader-participant as well measurable benefits for the leaders' organizations in the form of successful, lasting change initiatives.

Purpose

The purpose of the program is to provide leaders and leadership teams personal knowledge and skill development while, at the same time, assisting them in carrying out an actual change process within their organizations.

Program Details

  • Each 12-month program will include 10-15 executives representing three to five different companies.  Alternatively, the program can be conducted entirely for one company, with the executives representing a variety of areas within the organization.  In either case, two or three members of a particular leadership team are encouraged to participate in the process together.

  • Each program will bring together leaders who are interested in becoming more skilled in leading change, and who are engaged in leading an actual change initiative within their organizations. For example, the leaders may be initiating the implementation of a company-wide ERP system, the introduction of a new comprehensive work process, or the induction of a high-performance work culture.

  • The program will be built to provide "just in time" learning as the executives move through the year, planning for and carrying out their change initiatives.

  • Participants will come together 3 or 4 times over the course of a year to learn from the experts and learn from each other. The group learning will be largely self-directed, as the needs of the group will drive the instructional content and discussion. During these meetings, the leaders will be engaged in personal assessments, as well as problem solving and strategy planning activities.

  • All leaders or leadership teams will be assigned a personal coach/consultant who will work with the leader(s) between group sessions throughout the year. The coaches will be available to the leaders and leadership teams to assist with their personal development as well as to consult on the actual change process.  In addition, as needed, the coaches/consultants will help the leaders and leadership teams access specialized expertise from a pool of consultants, researchers, and other experts.
