Train-the-Trainer Workshop Series

Developing and Delivering Structured On-the-Job Training  (SOJT)

When it comes to acquiring new skills and behaviors, people learn best while "doing."  Therefore on-the-job-training (OJT) can be a powerful approach to teaching.  However, effective training requires structure.  Too often OJT is a chaotic, random learning experience.  Trainees merely observe experienced employees carry out their tasks.  They may not use the best and safest approaches, and they may not explain the logic behind what they are doing.  Frequently trainees are left with simple impressions of how the job should be performed, with no real understanding of the tasks.  Learning is left to chance.

Not only is unstructured OJT ineffective, it is inefficient.  Trainees are able to observe only those tasks that the experienced employee happens to perform during the training period.  Sometimes the trainee may wait for weeks or months to observe tasks that are not routine yet are crucial to job performance.

The purpose of this workshop is to teach participants how to develop and deliver a structured on-the-job training (SOJT) system.  While it is appropriate for anyone involved in planning and carrying out job training, it is especially relevant to those who oversee job training for technical jobs such as operators, technicians, and factory line-workers.  The structured OJT process that participants learn in this workshop will produce a training system that complies with most regulatory and quality systems standards and requirements.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Set clear learning objectives for OJT

  • Develop and use training plans that ensure consistency and continuity in the training

  • Describe and follow a 5-step model for delivering effective OJT

  • Explain how to design and use a checklist for assessing learning and ability to perform tasks
